Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives #2 - Leaping Lizard Cafe

Hello Friends,
Here at TTE Designs, I love jewelry & all things handmade, but also LOVE to eat.  When we were stationed overseas, two things influenced us. The ability to try new and different foods [my first tastes of Korean, Thai, Indian & Sushi just to name a few] and because of the lack of decent TV, we became huge fans of Food Network and especially Guy Fieri and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives who showcases delicious, eclectic places to eat.

In our Tidewater  VA area there are several of these 'Triple D' dining experiences and so we have decided to work our way through the list.

This past Saturday was a typical sunny and cold VA January. Perfect day for a lunch expedition.

The Leaping Lizard Cafe and Gift Shop~ 4408 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA is found in a quaint little old house and surrounding grounds and during the better part of the year is an outdoor Virginia grown produce market.

The menu features a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and such.

My DS ordered a 'Signature Sandwich' of Roast Beef, Turkey and Provolone panini [8.95], which came on a lovely toasted rosemary bread with a side of roasted potato salad and fresh crisp apple slices.

DH ordered a Roast Beef and Provolone [$8.95] sandwich served with tomato and a spicy horseradish mayonaise and the sides of apple and roasted potato salad. The have a nice selection of beer and wine. DH got a Terrapin IPA and I picked a Stella Artois.

DD ordered the Oven Roasted Turkey BLT [8.95] which featured oven roasted turkey, bacon and lettuce [no tomato or basil mayo for my allergy girl] on that fragrant rosemary bread along with sides.
Being a bit adventurous, I chose to try the Sweet Potato Biscuit and Soup plate [9.95]. This featured a light and slightly sweet biscuit stuffed with Surry ham and a generous slathering of peach jam. A great combination of salty and sweet.  I also opted for a soup of the day and tried the chicken and fresh spinach soup, which was nice but could have used a kick of Sriracha sauce for my personal taste. Mine was served with a salad of field greens, the roasted potato salad, and apple slices.

We arrived about 12:30 and did have to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. The venue is small with only about 8 table and a small bar inside and a few tables out in a covered porch area.  I do recommend you try the Leaping Lizard, I would love to go back in summer when produce is at its peak to see what other creations are on the menu.
All in all this was a delicious lunch and a great way to spend a nice family afternoon.  I hope you enjoyed this post. If you can't make it to The Leaping Lizard try a 'diner, drive-in or dive' in your area~ you won't be disappointed.

  1. Oh, this is making me hungry (not quite lunch time at 10:30 AM though!) In this area you have to get into the new local places fast before they give up from the competition from the chains!
