Thrifting Thursday 9-26-13 Repurposed Tins

Candy tins,  1928 jewelry tin, and a pretty floral canister tin

Welcome Thrifty Friends~ Today's Thrifting Thursday revolves around those fun retro/vintage tins that are so common in charity shops.  I've seen a number of tutorials, Pinterest pins and a bit of flotsam and jetsam out there on the internet regarding different uses for them.
I spent $3.02 on today's finds and as you can imagine the cheapskate frugal girl in me was happy.
After a good wipe down I selected the floral canister and with my trusty metal shears  in hand I began CAREFULLY cutting apart the can at the side seam.

[ PLEASE USE CAUTION when attempting any metal cutting, let this be a stern warning, it will give you a nasty cut if you are not extremely careful]

Once the wall was removed from the base, I used my trusty nylon hammer and my bench block to gently flatten out the sheet.

Once flat, I used my most awesome Swanstrom disc cutter to cut out a few circles. It cuts like butter...

Here's a good video by Rio Grande if you are interested to see how it works.

I cut one long row's worth and had 7 discs to choose from.
I filed and sanded the edges till smooth and even dapped one pair.
A couple of low tarnish, handmade copper ear wires and some faceted crystals and Voila~

Thanks for spending your time here. I ALWAYS appreciate you.

I plan to do some more with this and I have a new, high quality, metal dapping set on my birthday wish list so I will certainly do some more with this medium.  I'm thinking a matching necklace and bracelet are next up.

Have a great weekend,
Warm Regards,
Tammie

  5. I've been doing this for years. Also used polyclay templates for different designs.

  7. deconstructing a tin! Haven't seen so much about this in awhile! Linda and Opie O'Brien of Burnt Offerings demonstrated this technique in METAL DISCOVERY WORKSHOP, published in 2005 by North Light. It may be out of print now. They are friends of mine and made the most AMAZING stuff out of tins, published many times....and the shears used here were their favorite tool. Glad you did a post on this, Tammy, it's a technique that needs to be brought front and center AGAIN.
