Two for Tuesday 7-22-2014

Hi Friends~ I thought summer would bring me tons of free time to create and try many new projects. It really hasn't been the case at all. However, here are two polymer cane  projects I have done this week.
Above you see a houndstooth pattern that I attempted based on a Pinterest pin I liked. I think it was pretty successful for the most part and I will probably try that one again to see if I can sharpen it up.
Here I was attempting a Monarch butterfly pattern.  It was a huge cane. and although I don't mind the way it turned out- I will use much smaller white canes next time I try it. It was definitely a challenge to try and reduce because of it's odd shape. That technique requires more practice too.

It didn't stop me from using it. I like the Japanese feel that the pattern gave. I hope it's unique and not too "Halloween-y"

Storage tin top, pendant & earring set veneers, wing bead earring pair and some of my most fav century lentils from the scraps.

Oh and I even tried a picture frame.

So there's my two for Tuesday.  Thanks for looking and I'd appreciate any comments or advice.
Have a great week!
Warm Regards,
Tammie

  1. Fantastic, Tammie! I never would have thought of the hounds tooth, but it really works. and the monarch is fabulous! I would be afraid to cut into it, for fear it would distort!

    1. Thanks Beti- Heather's class really changed my mind about caning. I've really been inspired to try more complex techniques. I was finally able to get the monarch cane into more of a 'leaf' shape and then used mirror image slices to make my wings. These were both freebie tuts I found on the net. Give it a shot - I figure... it's only clay :-D

  2. Tammie, I love reading your blog posts! That houndstooth cane is pretty and dramatic. The butterfly does not look halloweeny at all, it's a beautiful abstract on those lentil beads, and I rather love the wing shapes as well. I'm with you, I thought I'd have plenty of time to do some artistic exploration this summer, instead I've been flying from place to place!

  3. Wow Tammie I love the monarch cane. I will have to look for that tutorial. I haven't had much time either to play lately. Somehow I always forget how busy summer gets! I really like the hounds tooth cane too, it looks great. I still have that lily cane floating around in my head and I really want to make one, hopefully I will have time soon.

    1. Thank you Kim, I think you should do a lily cane, that would be pretty. Just google free monarch butterfly cane tutorial, I may have it on my Pinterest too if you are interested.

  4. Love what you did with the butterfly cane, Tammie. The houndstooth looks like one of Meg Newberg's :) I love her (http://polymerclayworkshop.com/cane-builder-subscription/) as her designs are very organic as opposed to precise... I need help straying from a fixed pattern and hers include lots of "play".

I added you to a FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/52weeklycanes/ Lots of links to different canes both simple and complex (look under files). I don't post anything as I have done most of these in the past, but it is fun to see how everyone interprets theirs :)

Canes are such fun, Tammie :) I hope to see lots more here!

  6. These are really amazing!!! I like the hounds tooth it is really cool. I adore the butterfly! I don't think it is remotely halloweeny, It is just a bit goth though if you look at your pendant? You can see a female skull with her hands cupping her chin. Like a sexy skull, hasn't learned she is dead yet??? LOL I think it is wonderful!!!

    1. Thanks Robin, I appreciate your kind comments. I really like the houndstooth too. I never noticed a skull face until you mentioned it, isn't that funny how different people see different things in something? :-D

  7. With a house full of Bama fans you know I like the houndstooth. Can't wait to see what you use that cane for. As for the monarch I agree with the Japanese feel. It reminds me of laquerware. The white give it a stain glass vibe which makes it feel more Gothic than Halloween-y to me. I must say your dedication to your blog and fb page is inspiring and motivating. It's amazing how much you balance so beautifully.
